PEACH members won a repairs and refurbishment programme across blocks because of the petition in 2021, which demanded that the Council invest in homes now, no more living in unsafe homes. This refurbishment programme was won across all blocks and tenures (Council and Temporary Tenants).
2 years on and there have been many wins huge: many refurbishments are now completed, the council have got rid of damp and mould and put new windows in many blocks. However, we have heard many stories of people who are still living in unsafe homes, bad quality work has been done to their homes – mould keeps coming back – and some members are still waiting for the works to start! This isn’t good enough. PEACH Repairs Reps have been working hard to put pressure on the council to make sure the work is done properly, making sure ‘everyone’s home is safe and no one is left behind’.
PEACH Repairs Reps have kept the pressure on Newham Council: making sure the repairs and refurbishments are done properly and escalating issues from members who are being ignored. Often, Newham Council is often not sticking to their word – we need everyone to stick together until all the work is done properly and everyone is living in safe homes. Big up PEACH reps.
More PEACH Reps are needed: PEACH runs on solidarity not charity: members support each other with issues. Not everyone knows how to fight for their rights, especially whilst living with the stress of an unsafe home, so it is important to support each other in these times. If your home is safe, consider giving back by supporting your neighbours to make sure their work is done properly – become repairs Rep. You will be supported in the role through training, learning valuable skills. Get in touch!
If your house is unsafe, you are unsure of your rights or you are not being listened to by the Council, contact a PEACH Repairs Rep, PEACH organiser or write in the WhatsApp groups.
