Our big collective long-term housing campaign ‘Permanent Safe Homes NOW’, can also be accompanied by smaller short-term wins for individual PEACH members, such as eviction resistance, refurbishments and repairs. These smaller wins mean that people live in better housing conditions today, not in many years to come when the regeneration happens. This also means that PEACH members have more capacity to organise for the big collective campaign and they are committed to PEACH. We know some PEACH members move on, but many stick around and keep fighting for a better future where everyone in the community has permanent, safe homes!
PEACH members attend 6-weekly Member Solidarity Housing Clubs to support each other to fight for their individual wins too. Members with experience of winning their demands support members to understand their issues (including bidding, housing register, disrepair and eviction) and produce an action plan that they will carry out themselves, and in turn develop the skills to support their neighbours.
Over 12 months to December 2023, over 60 repairs and refurbishments neglected by the council have been escalated and resolved. These wins are life-changing for our members; 3 families with complex health conditions were successfully moved out of their unsafe homes and refurbishments were fast tracked, their health has significantly improved since.
