What We’re Fighting For

These are the core demands being made by tenants, residents, and organisers across Custom House:

• Safe: No more mould, damp, disrepair or overcrowding. These conditions are life-threatening and prevent recovery.
• Permanent: Secure tenancies for all residents stuck in 'temporary' housing for years. End the fear of sudden relocation.
• Now: Regeneration has taken decades. We won’t wait another year to get what we were promised.

A Community in Crisis

Members report worsening health linked to poor housing conditions. Raya* says: “After hours at home, I can’t breathe properly. I get rashes. I’ve had to go to A&E.”

Many children in temporary accommodation miss school, are displaced far from their networks, and grow up with no stable home. This is preventable — if Newham Council chooses to act.

The Mayor Has the Power

Mayor Fiaz promised permanent homes during negotiations in 2020. In 2023, she said her hands were tied. This isn’t true — the council can exercise discretion under their own housing policy. We’re demanding she keeps her word.

London needs more council homes. The Mayor of London is already buying back homes across the city. Why not start here — by making existing ‘temporary’ homes permanent?
