First 100 Residents back our Manifesto

“Custom House is our House”

PEACH Housing Club has put together this Regeneration Manifesto for the 2018 elections, which is being sent out to candidates, standing in the upcoming local elections.

Mayoral candidates Robin Wales and Rokhsana Fiaz have both said they are considering their response and we look forward to hearing from them in more detail.

We are pleased to say that another 50 residents have signed the Manifesto in the last few days and we now have 100 names backing our Manifesto. See below for the full details.

Custom House has waited for over 10 years for regeneration to begin; buildings have crumbled and services have closed but our community is strong and we have taken matters into our own hands.

PEACH Housing Club now has over 100 members and by involving over 500 residents we have created our own amazing plan for the regeneration of Custom House, with more genuinely affordable housing, community services and beautiful family-friendly streets.

While everyone agrees that community involvement is a good idea, Council’s are not often willing to give communities a real opportunity to be in the driving seat. We believe that by working together formally we can achieve the best possible regeneration for all.

We are asking you, as a mayoral candidate for the Labour Party to do the following if elected:

  1. Recognise the great work PEACH Housing Club have done, and commit to meeting with us personally twice a year, including once in the first 3 months in office. In addition, directing your team to meet with us as appropriate.
  2. Commit to sharing decision making power with the community in the design, delivery and future management of Custom House regeneration.
  3. Protect public assets by finding a way to use public money to finance the regeneration as a first option.
  4. Pledge to write a Charter with PEACH’s Mears Cats, to ensure that Tando/Mears residents have rights under regeneration.
  5. Increase the target of genuinely affordable housing from 17.5% to the maximum possible by exploring new, creative options available.
  6. Guarantee that the final regeneration plans are put before residents in a binding ballot.

Both Council’s and communities have been left struggling in the face of central government cuts and overly-powerful developers. We hope you agree that now is the time to take a new direction and demonstrate how Councils and the community can come together and deliver in the face of adversity.

We would greatly appreciate if you would reply to this manifesto (taking each of the 6 points in turn) by the end of Tuesday 27th February, so that we can publicise your response to our members and wider networks. In the event of your successful selection as the Labour mayoral candidate we invite you to our PEACH 5 year anniversary event on the evening of Friday the 20th April 2018 to celebrate our future working relationship.

We wish you the best of luck with your campaign ahead, and please feel free to contact us to discuss this further.

*By genuinely affordable housing, we mean both social housing at target rent and affordable ownership models pegged to local incomes. We do not mean intermediate housing up to 80% to market rent.
