PEACH Open Letter to Mayor of Newham

Dear the Mayor of Newham,

We are looking forward to meeting with you on Wednesday 15th May. We want to work with you. So, we are sharing our solutions to the dangerous conditions we live in and the fears that we will be pushed out of our community. We are counting on you – our lives depend on it.

We are PEACH. Most of us are temporary council tenants who are currently living in the regeneration sites of Custom House and Canning Town. Some of us have been moved out in the last 5 years and want to return to our community.

Safe Homes NOW

Make our homes safe and healthy to live in now. Our demands…

  1. Finish what you started: Commit to finishing the refurbishment programme until all our homes are safe from disrepair, collapse, damp and mould and fire. Do this by September 2024. Not another winter!
  2. Make our streets safe with lighting, bins, caretaking and maintenance
  3. Adapt our homes to meet our accessibility needs

Permanent Homes NOW

Keep our community together. Our demands…

  1. Promise us that everyone living in all phases of the Custom House & Canning Town regeneration sites will not be moved by the council from our existing homes before the regeneration happens. Stop moving us.
  2. Transfer our temporary council tenancies into secure council tenancies now, no more waiting for the regeneration.

Thank you, Mayor of Newham. See you soon.

“18 years temporary accommodation, 16 properties, still hoping”

“Mould is toxic.
Since I moved into Lawrence Street, I’ve been feeling very ill”

“I’ve been living in temporary accommodation for 13 years. Being in temporary accommodation I feel insecure. We can’t plan properly. It’s like we don’t have a life. It’s really really depressing and stressing not knowing what is to come.”

“I’ve been in temporary accommodation for 13 years. Me and my five kids. We need a permanent home now.”

“Everybody in this room is here for a reason: to get permanent homes for theirselves and their children. If you imagine a tree with no roots, this is the roots. Anyway, Permanent Homes Now”
